On November 4th, we experienced our first field work. We spoke on the phone with a nun named Sister Mary Ellen O’Boyle. A group member had already met her because she is a nun at his church so that’s how we initially met her. We spoke to her about meeting and conversing the topic of human trafficking. We scheduled to meet the next week at The Coffee Bean to introduce ourselves and just really understand the subject. As soon as we got off the phone we were ecstatic that we had scheduled our first meeting with a very knowledgeable person.
When the time came around to meet her, we were waiting in the lobby going over our list of questions, full of nerves. We saw her walking up to our school and easily identified her because our group member who had previously talked with her, recognized who she was. We had a quick introduction and went off to The Coffee Bean. We got a few snacks, then immediately settled in for our conversation. We discussed the basic understandings of sexual trafficking in the United States. She told us about all kinds of stories, advice, and statistics about the topic. I had already knew little about the subject, but she really helped me understand the full picture of trafficking. She made us feel very comfortable asking her any questions which I appreciated very much. When we were about finished talking, I felt much more educated on the topic and we were only on our first field work. We vocalized our appreciation, thanking her for all she has helped us with and asked for a picture. We learned so many important aspects and opinions about our topic. We were so relieved that we had successfully finished our first field work.
