On Thursday October 16th, Monica, Ava, Nancy (Ava’s stepmom), and I went to Bartholomew’s Church which is where an Organization called Coalition for the Homeless hands out food to people every night starting at 6pm. We were told to wait by the side entrance and ask for James. Next to a truck parked outside, a man was going through something. We asked if he was James. He said yes and asked if we were volunteers. When we said yes, he brought us into the building and showed us the room where we would help handout food. He gave us aprons, gloves, and hair nets. Once we had put them on, a younger man with light hair came up to us and introduced himself as Adam. He pointed us in the direction of hot food in containers on a table in the corner. He told us that we should fill up the plastic bowls to the brim with combinations of pasta, chicken, beef, broccoli, and zucchini. Then the four of us spent the next 30 minutes having fun in an assembly line dishing out different foods and placing them along the table. A few minutes later, we were told to get ready because the people were coming in. Just as they promised, 10 or so people came through the door heading straight for the food line. As the hour went by, we were asked what was in each bowl, if they could have two or which one I thought was the best. When all of the bowl were gone and no one was coming through the door, I felt a feeling. Not one I had ever felt before. It was release, a reward. I helped people. Every smile someone gave me, I felt amazing. I want to do this again soon. Maybe I will continue going there when I’m in highschool. It’s a really amazing organization.
