On Saturday I worked with Carrie Borows and Amy Fabrikant and Zoe Picayo to hang pictures in the Visibility Exhibit. Sam assisted me by helping hang pictures with ever irritating glue dots. We made quick work of putting up the pictures and we were able to view the pictures of LGBTQ members and allies who are proud to be their friends and family.
I was awed by the support LREI shows for minorities and I was very proud that I was able to attend and help with such an amazing tradition. Carrie and Amy were very kind to include us in helping them. I learned a lot about the LGBTQ members in our community, as well as reading about young children who are growing up with LGBTQ friends and learning that being LGBTQ is totally normal. A big step in our society is try to make the future (children) learn that LGBTQ members are always to be accepted and LREI is doing our best to make sure kids know this. Some of the statistics and quotes I saw were:
“In addition to the many professional ties that bring the members of the Middle School faculty together to support excellent teaching and meaningful learning, the personal connections run equally deep. The entire Middle School family affirms our love and support for Suzanne and Xin who by simply being themselves encourage each of us to work harder to be our best selves.” -MS faculty
I already knew how much the MS faculty loves each other but it was great to see it so beautifully displayed and worded.
“Russian lawmaker proposes bill that would deny gay parents custody over children.” -Washington Post
This is an example of the disgusting homophobia that occurs in many places, of which there is currently quite a lot in Russia.
Like the message on a poster of Xin and Eric marrying in Connecticut, “Love is Love.”
