On Thursday, February 20th our entire class went to a water treatment
plant in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Julia’s mom, Hilary Meltzer, who works at
the DEP (Department of Environmental Protection) has been helping us
and she helped set up the fieldwork in Brooklyn. While we were there a
man named Walter gave us a presentation on what water waste was and
why it must be treated. He explained that water waste is used water
and the number one reason it be treated is because of diseases people
can get from it. He also said that eveyday 1.3 billion gallons of
water needs to be treated. We later walked around the treatment plant
and saw the process of treated the water. In order to decontaminate
it, it must go through a long process that includes digesting the
water and chlorinating the water. All wasted water from showers,
toilets and many other places will to directly to a water treatment
plant and it will be cleaned no matter what because their is strict
laws about water treatme
