On Thursday, February 6th, my social justice group screened a movie for the class. The movie was called Bhopali. It was about a gas disaster that happened in Bhopal, Indian because of union carbine. There was a gas spillage and around 20,000 people died. Union carbine has not taken responsibility and because the only thing they have done is sent 450 million dollars to Bhopal due to the supreme court’s orders. Though this may seem like a lot it was very little for a multi-million dollar company and only gave about 300 dollars to each victim. This is very little money for people who need extreme medical care for conditions they got after the disaster. We showed the class the first two chapters and the end. Before we showed the movie we asked everyone a few starting questions and if they had every heard of the Bhopal disaster and only one person had. This shows how little the disaster was talked about and and how we need to educate more people about what happened and spread the word. After the movie, we asked them question about what they felt after watching the movie. Everyone was shaken up and wanted to make a change. Our social justice group hopes to do something possibly using social media and spread the word about what happened.
