The POTS organization: Part of the Solution 1/27/14

Here is a photo of the rest of my group. And behind them was the board we drew on and then later on put a quote in the middle. The quote says, “Life is tough, but so are you” – Kid President

Monday 27, 2014 we went on a fieldwork to POTS (Part Of The Solution) kitchen where we helped prepare for the lunch they were going to serve at 12:00. It started when we got on the train and went all the way up to the Bronx. When we finally got there it took us a few minutes to understand which direction to go. So we started walking one direction, until we noticed that it was the wrong way, so we turned around. When we finally found the place there was a man who was waiting for us. We walked in and there was another lady who introduced us and wanted us to write an inspirational quote for the people to see when they walked in. When we were done writing the quote on the board we washed down the tables and then set them with napkins and utensils. After that we went to the kitchen and put on our smocks and sat down until it was time to help. In the beginning we didn’t do anything until the man told us to go outside and get the food from the car. So we walked outside and headed to the car to go pick up some of the bread. After the lady told us that we had to put a plastic bag into the bin and put in only buns, bagels and bread. Then later on a man told us to go into the kitchen and fluff the couscous. When I first heard him say, “fluff the couscous” I wasn’t sure what he meant until he actually showed us. For those who don’t knowing what fluffing is, it’s basically using a fork to separate any clumps and anything stuck to the bottom.

As I was there I got to experience another way they do soup kitchens. I had a fun time being able to help prepare for the lunch, even if I wasn’t able to actually hand people food. While I was their I was able to learn more about how they set up. Something that I found interesting about POTS was that before lunch, while we were preparing they brought 4 big boxes with different types of chips for people to take home with them. I thought that was a really sweet thing for POTS to consider because from going to St. James soup kitchen and the Holy Apostles they don’t give them anything to take back to their home.
