On Tuesday, December 10, we went to City Hall to meet with Samantha Levine, the woman who came up with the idea for the I’m a Girl Campaign. Samantha had been affected by women in the media from a young age. She was always conscious about girls that were struggling with body image. These things influenced her to start the campaign. Her first step of beginning the I’m a Girl Campaign was to get in touch with different organizations such as Girls Inc. and the Lower East Side Girls Club. She talked to many different girls about how they felt about women. For the campaign, Samantha didn’t take models. She took daughters of people who she worked with. The older girls were more self conscious than the younger girls. Samantha told us that girls’ self esteem drops at age 12. It made her realize how much pressure there was on girls to look a certain way. She said it was incredibly rewarding to work with the girls. At first, she didn’t know what would happen with the campaign. Now she feels that it is part of a conversation that needs to continue and that people around the country should take more notice of it. This could lead to more diversity of images of women in the media today. She also noted that people need to know that these photos of women in the media are fake! Overall, I had a good time interviewing Samantha Levine about the I’m a Girl Campaign. It made me realize that just one person could create a creative, successful campaign
