In 2006, my dad read an article about the Innocence Project in the newspaper and told me about it. I realized it was a good cause and donated, but it wasn’t my main focus, I donated more to Heifer, another great organization. In 2009 my dad read an article about Fernando Bermudez, and again told me. His story catapulted the Innocence Project to the front of my mind. At that point I never imagined I would see him except in pictures. Yet two years later, there he is in front of me, speaking to the middle school, again calling to my mind the amazing power of the Innocence Project. At that point I figured that was it, I wouldn’t see him again. I was wrong again, two years after that, not only did I see him, but I had played a part in bringing him in, and I was working with him. It is funny in a way, another one of those coincidences, his newspaper article, and later visit, sparked my interest in this subject again. His visit brought me to the topic, the topic brought him back. Everything happens for a reason, right? I suppose I haven’t said much about the story, but he said it already, and better than I could. I do suppose that’s why he does that for a living. Oh well, what can I say? We will try to keep in touch with him and ask how his cases are going? We will try to work with him in the future? All of the above? None of the above? I am still just blown away by the fact that I met this guy twice after deciding that I was most likely never going to see him again. There really isn’t much to say anymore.
