On 12/16/13 my social justice group and I visited The Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen. We left school at 9:00 and then we got on the train and took the C train to 23rd street. As we entered Holy Apostle Church Bob (who we contacted to volunteer) greeted us and gave us Hats, Aprons and gloves. In the beginning they were assigning jobs to the volunteers. Sophia was assigned wrapping silverware and Lola, Mei and I were assigned to help with the tables. We had to clean the tables, get fresh milk and water, and salt or pepper. When Lola and I were working we were approached by a friendly woman, who later decided to commemorate us and write us a note about how hard we worked and much she enjoyed our help. The Church served people 10:30 to 1:30. I really enjoyed helping and volunteering at this church because it was simple and worthwhile but also very helpful for the people who are less fortunate. The impact this visit had on me was that helping in the community is a lot more fun then people believe it is. I like to talk a lot so being able to interact and socialize with people who came to the Church for help and food was very fun for me. I want to remember to encourage kids that come to my teach in to volunteer as much as possible because its easy and fun and shows how much you care for others. The Church likes to make sure that everyone has been served before the previous attenders can get seconds on the meals so your allowed to eat again at 12:30. I also learned that not all people that attend this event are poor and homeless. Some people come just to save money. I conversed with a man who explained to me that he works and earns everything he has and its enough for him to get by happily. He comes to the Holy Apostles Church for his lunch breaks so he can save his money for something for his children or wife. He also said how this church is every helpful and shows him that people do care about the less fortunate, and he likes to volunteer here on the weekends.
