Poverty Has No Face

11/20/13-Volunteer Work At St. John’s Food Pantry

On Wednesday, November 20th, our Social Justice group joined Margaret’s 6th grade advisory to volunteer at St. John’s Food Pantry they have been making lots of progress, and have been see lots more visitors recently due to cuts on food stamps. We decided to volunteer especially around this time because it was all most Thanksgiving, and there would be a lot of people. After volunteering and taking a tour, we had a small interview with Mary. She explained how these people coming to recieve from the pantry are often misconceived as homeless. Actually, in order to register to get the food, on must provide an Adress, to prove that you are living in a home, or an apartment. She explained how most people who go food pantries are usually having trouble being able to feed their families, but many of the people have jobs and are not homeless. This contradicts the thought that people who go to food pantries are jobless and homeless because they are lazy and stupid. It also supports our main idea that there is more to somebody that you might see on the street or going to a food pantry then what meets the eye
