On December 10, 2013 my social justice group and I took a trip to the building of The Crime Commission of New York and met with their organization’s president Richard Aborn. As soon as we arrived we were greeted with smiles from members of the commission all excited to see youth interested in what they do. We entered a meeting room and while there we waited for Richard Aborn. When he arrived in the room we introduced ourselves to him and got straight to our interview. We asked him a multitude of questions all of which he answered attentively and directly. One of the questions we asked was, what are some of things he and his organization have done in the fight against gun violence. He responded by showing a copy of the original document that shows the passing of the Brady Bill. The Brady Bill is a provision of US federal law that requires a waiting period for handgun purchases and background checks and those who wish to purchase handguns. After showing us the bill he even showed my group a letter from former President Bill Clinton, thanking him for his efforts in the fight against gun violence. Once he finished showing us what he did, he gave us some advice on what we can do as America’s youth in the fight against gun violence. He told us to use social media to spread the word and to write letters to important politicians about how we feel towards this important social issue. From our fieldwork with Richard Aborn we were able to learn from one of the leaders and veterans of the fight against gun violence.
