On December 2nd, my group and I meet Nicole Epps, a representative from Safe Horizon, for lunch. The goal of our meeting with Nicole Epps was to discuss our future with Safe Horizon and figure out what kinds of work we would want to do for them. We ultimately decided to work with homeless youth.I learned about Safe Horizon as an organization. I learned about how Safe Horizon has nine Domestic Violence Centers in the NYC area, seven are Emergent Care Centers and two are Transitional Housing Centers. They also help with trauma and provides rehousing and vocational opportunities. They will also change locks on doors so that the abusive partner can’t get back into the home of their victim. Nicole also told us how she noticed that for the hotline, the call trend goes down during holidays and spikes up after New Years. Nicole thinks this is because the abuser is usually directly related to the victim and the victim doesn’t want to report the abuse either because they would have to spend more time with them over the holidays, or because they partially felt guilty for the abuse. Nicole also noticed how victims of domestic violence are usually abused 7 times before getting out of the relationship. This visit had a very great impact on out group because we learned about a part of our topic that we didn’t know a lot about. In the future, my group and I would definitely love to continue to work with Nicole and Safe Horizon. A special thank you to Nicole Epps for meeting with us and thank you for the amazing folders, I use it every day.
