My social justice group and I took a trip to interview two women who work at The Center. The Center is a organization that works with LGBTQ youth in social events and counseling. They assist the youth in telling their parents, depression counseling, family counseling, making friends in the same situation and redirecting them to other origination or homeless shelters that will help more with the persons situation. They hold events like dances and peer talks where they are safe to talk about whatever they want with kids their age.
The women told us a lot of interesting facts and statistics we didn’t know before. I think our group learned a lot more about our topic. I learned that not all LGBTQ organizations are about changing the parents’ points of view or finding them a place to stay. Some, like The Center, are helping with social skills and inner problems to prepare them for the world.
Something that went well on our visit is that everyone was willing to talk and speak up. One thing we might have to work on for next time is having all of our questions in one place. Sometimes our next question would be on a phone instead of the IPad so it mad it difficult for us to find which one we should be reading from. We were also missing one of members and forgot to ask if he had any questions. Maybe next time we should check in with everyone to make sure that we all have one personal question we made up ourselves that we might want to ask. I think if we all ask our own questiona it will be easier to write the blog post.
