Meeting with Hilary Meltzer 12/3

On December 3rd my group and I met with Hilary Meltzer. She works for the Department of Environmental Protection. She gave us a presentation about fracking and the treatment of the water in the United States of America.  She started off by talking about water in New York and how there is different sheds for different part of the city. She said that people in the city use a billion gallons a day of water. After using water it goes into a drain and if the sewage overflows it will go untreated into the harbor and that’s why river like the Gowanus River are so polluted. 11 billion gallons of storage for sewage to into the Gowanus River and cancerous fluids are hidden underneath. She also talked about the pros and cons of fracking. The pro is that the US needs natural gas. The con is that when fracking, a big risk is that it will tap into water sheds and poison people water. Many people have different opinion on the matter and there is many protests where citizens state their opinions. She also talked about events where you plant trees and my group and I really want to and get involved and make a difference. Overall, she was very helpful and answered many questions.
