Volunteered with children from Homes for the Homeless

On November 22 our group visited homes for the homeless, a shelter for families. We got to do arts and crafts with the little kids and made turkey themed coasters and napkin holders. It was lots of fun and we got to talk to them about their interests and really anything they wanted. What was interesting was how very normal they were. People think of the poor as these extra terrestrial creatures but these kids were very very normal. They went to school and had friends but the only thing that was different was their address and their background. It was really fun working with them and we hope to learn more about children living in poverty and children who aren’t.

My name is Chiara and I am in the 8th grade at LREI. My social justice topic is poverty and homelessness in NYC and our goal is to redefine the misconception and predisposition of what poverty is and what it looks like. I am passionate about the issue of poverty because is it an alaive and growing issue in the United States and in the world.
