On Thursday, November 21st night my Social Justice Group and I attended to a night event called Activist Night organized by NOW: National Organization For Women. This organization hosts many events with different themes monthly; this month’s event was women’s philosophical night. Our goal was to learn basics of feminism and how many people sustained it. During this evening I learned about,, and we talked about, philosophers and different ways of thinking about feminism. During the discussion we looked and focused on many philosophers, but in particular on Judith Butler, who sustained that, once a baby is born, parents decide their gender, basing on their vagina or penis. She sustains that a vagina doesn’t make you a girl and a penis doesn’t make you a boy. Many times we are affected by many people around us that make us have a certain idea about what gender is, and most of the time that idea is completely wrong. Every person identifies themselves in many different ways. She sustained that it was wrong, some of her quotations are: “There is no truth behind a ‘gender'” and “Gender is performative.” My idea of gender changed a lot during the time. We also noticed and it was really interesting to learn how usually for girls, parents or either people who inspire them impact their lives deciding how a woman should act by teaching manners that are required for a women, for example crossing legs while seated. However, all things taught to us because we are women, that is defined “performative”. During this discussion we mostly talked about gender and what it means. We finished the discussion thinking that many times we have been affected and we are affected by men and what they think and say. Women have to stand out for themselves.
