Before we left for Thanksgiving weekend I contacted a lady named Lauren Mucciolo who came in last year to speak to the class about the movie she had recently filmed. Last year in 2012 Lauren produced a movie called “Poor Kids” that was from the perspective of 3 families. So what we wanted to do was bring her back to speak to the class because we really liked her movie.
First what my group did to get prepared was we got the class to watch the movie and to think of some questions to ask her when she visited. After the break we came back and we got an introduction ready to introduce her to our class. When the time came, Lola and I went downstairs to greet her and to take her to our classroom. After we got the class settled we brought her to the front and we showed the trailer so people could have a little memory of what happened in the documentary. When that was finally over she told us about what it was like to work with the families and how they were able to find families.
While she was talking I thought it was really interesting how she said that she was still in contact with the families, she said that one of them moved in and out of the motel, another family has moved out of the Salvation Army shelter and owns their own house, the last family had their child and they now have 3 children… I think. Laura also told us that because it was such a good hit, people wanted to donate money, so they let them but they wanted to make sure that none of them were going to harm them so the people had to donate it to the movie, which then they would hand out. Something that I thought was really smart she told us was that instead of giving them all the money at once they would give them the money in little proportions because they wanted to make sure they didn’t use it right up or buy something really expensive that they would be left with no money.
While Lauren was here I learned so much about her movie and got to learn about how they chose these three families. She told us that they talked to shelters who then asked those families if any of them would want to come and be in a movie. After they interviewed families that wanted to participate in the movie. Then they chose 3 families to focus on. Overall, it was great getting to meet the producer of “Poor Kids” and I really enjoyed the movie and learned so much about the movie and what her reactions were while filming these families. From watching this, this made me want to go out and try to make a difference.
