During the middle of November, my social justice group went to St. John’s Food Pantry. While we were there, we volunteered to do all different jobs. I helped hand out food for single people. This food pantry only provides food for people that have an address. Sister Mary talked to us about what each bag provides. For a single person, one bag provides two cans of some kind of meat, a can of green beans or spinach, one can of soup, cereal and a jar of peanut butter. A bag for a family of 4 or more provides two large cans of soup, two large cans of some kind of protein (fish, chicken soup), one large can of beets, two large cans of different vegetables and a 2 pound bag of rice. This fieldwork visit impacted our group by a lot because it showed us how people who live in apartments, but are poor, do get food. It shows us how lucky we are to get to eat whatever and whenever we want without having limits. It was really great to volunteer in helping to pass out food. One package of canned food costs about $9000 for 3 months worth of food. We are planning to volunteer more.

Hello! My name is Carla. I am an 8th grader at LREI. I am french and I like to ski. Poverty is important to me because it makes me realize how thankful I am to have food, clothing and shelter available to me all the time. Some people live in cardboard boxes and only eat one little meal a day.
