In mid-November, our poverty group went to volunteer at the St. John’s Food Pantry. While we were there, we all were doing various jobs. Some people were carrying carts up the stairs, while others were handing people food. At St. John’s Food Pantry, you have to be a member to be able to receive food. You can’t just walk in and get free food – everyone who wants to be a member has to have an address. Many people think that the people at the St. John’s Food Pantry are homeless people who are living on the streets. This is not true; there are many people living in poverty that have homes. People living in poverty look just like everyone else. At the food pantry, we spoke to Sister Mary, who told us that many of the members at the St. John’s Food Pantry are just one pay check away from living on the streets. At the food pantry, we learned that people living in poverty are normal people. My job at the food pantry was to let everyone there know that the food pantry will be closed on Thanksgiving. I handed out papers and talked to people walking by. Everyone was very friendly and they all smiled at us. We each had an important job, and we all got to interact with the people there. This fieldwork inspired us to let the world know that people living in poverty aren’t just homeless people living on the streets. They also aren’t people who are begging for money – they have a family, a home and a job. Overall, we had an informative and productive fieldwork.
