Last week, November 13, my poverty group went to visit the the McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research. We had an interview with Mary McCay, the director of the institute, and one of her colleagues, Ammu, and a student. This institute focuses on mental health. They work with students in high schools who are prone to drop out and about 40% drop out before they graduate. The mental health clinics are overbooked and have about a 10-year wait to get in. The organization provided us with information on doing interviews with people who actually are homeless. She gave us ideas for different drives we should run and office letters to Santa. She believes that youth focusing on poverty are going to be the ones to end poverty. This fieldwork was very helpful to our study of poverty.
