11/6/13 Covenant House: Interview With Alice Steigerwald

On November 6, 2013 we met with Alice Steigerwald, who is the manager of the media and outreach department for the Covenant House. She gave us a lot of interesting statistics, and talked about her program. The Covenant House acts as a shelter, and also has programs that help people find houses, and jobs. This program is called the Transitional Houses, where the Covenant House has set up “houses” throughout the U.S, Canada, and Latin America where people who go there are able to break free from homelessness. She talked about children under sixteen living in poverty not being able to receive help under the Covenant House. Their matters are brought to the Government under the Child Protective Services. She talked about high school dropout rates being very high, because of the way they were brought up, and how most of the time, their parents are responsible. This is because their parents are not paying enough attention to the children, who are usually left to make wrongful decisions in life, because their parents were not there to keep them on the right path. In 2012, about ≈≈≈ children living poverty did not earn their diplomas.

We talked for almost an hour, and she ended up recommending different organizations that we could talk to. However Covenant House is the biggest organizations that deals with supportive housing, and teenagers and young adults living in poverty. We also tried to see if we could interview any of their clients or visit one of their shelters. However, this did not work because we were underage, and were not allowed to make direct contact with the people living there.

Hello, my name is Scekem Wells. I am an eighth grader from LREI, a school in the Greenwich Village. My social justice group focuses on Poverty, however we chose specifically to focus on homelessness. My group is made up of five students. I chose to do poverty for social justice because it makes me think about the less fortunate, and it also makes me grateful that I have a home and food and clean water.
