In late October, our poverty group went to the Covenant House. While we were there, we had an interview with Alice Steigerwald, the Deputy Director. She talked to us about what happens on a daily basis at the Covenant House. We are too young to see the kids there, so Alice informed us about everything that they do there. The Covenant house provides 108 beds for people 16-24. They help teach these kids how to do simple things that a parent never taught them. For example, they teach the teenagers how to clean a room, and what to wear at a job interview. This interview had a large impact on our group. It showed us that we take so many simple things for granted everyday. The goal of this field work was to learn about the covenant house and to gather more information about teenagers in poverty. Teenagers who are at the covenant house are there because they have either been kicked out of their home, homeless, abused, raped or pregnant. The volunteers at the covenant house provides care for teen parents and their babies as well. One thing that I want to remember about this visit was how lucky I am to have shelter, food, water and loving parents. Our next step is to get hands-on and to try and make a difference. We have future field works planned to do so.
