Interview with Alice Stiegerwald at the Covenant House

In late October, my group went to Covenant House. During this visit, we got to interview Alice Steigerwald. She told us about what the students do on a daily basis. The Covenant House provides 108 beds for the children to sleep in and what to wear during interviews. The students learn how to do daily chores. For example, cleaning your room and making your bed. The Covenant House refuses a minimum 10 teenagers a day. The age goes from 16-24. The students have to be something from 9 am to 5 pm. The students that live here come from being raped, abused, kidnapped or homeless. The house provides housing for pregnant mothers under 21. On weekends, they have a choice of doing anything they want, but they have a curfew of 9 pm. This interview impacted our group and helped us learn more about what poverty is really about. We were hoping to meet the students but because of our age, we were not allowed to talk to them. Looking further at our upcoming field works, we are focusing on doing more hands-on activities.

Hello! My name is Carla. I am an 8th grader at LREI. I am french and I like to ski. Poverty is important to me because it makes me realize how thankful I am to have food, clothing and shelter available to me all the time. Some people live in cardboard boxes and only eat one little meal a day.
