Amanda Setiawan/ Engineers Without Borders NYU Chapter 11/6/13

Recently we had an interesting meeting with on the the leaders of the Engineers Without Borders NYU Chapter. It was a educational experience in which we learned about ways we could help, and about ways the they are already helping. Amanda’s NYU chapter is currently working on a multitude of things. As work often in third world countries they have to be mindful of the way that they instigate these projects. Amanda Setiawan specifically told us they they put their name out there and have the communities ask. Currently in El Salvador they are just finishing up on a project relating to the water supply of the community. The water being collected was tainted by dirt and debris from other items. Engineers Without Borders created a sanitation system where the water from the mountains could cleanly flow, and be filtered as it rushed down the mountain. Engineers Without Borders has set a main goal. That goal is to create self sustainability in these communities. this is so they know how to work the machines change the filter, and keep their systems running. This chapter is also doing many other projects like this in rural areas. Not only does Engineers Without Borders help in other countries and far away areas. It is also very community based.

NYU chapter in particular believes that helping the community around us is crucial. They often help after natural disasters such as hurricane Sandy. They research why these kinds of storms have been more abundant over the last to years. Just like us they know that one person can not do it all but can surly make a change. They inspire others to make the change with us, so that we can have a better community.
