My Social Justice Group visited the UN and attended a conference about Poverty, and what can we do to help. I learned at the conference that children struggle with the topic of poverty at schools in fear that they might be judged or criticized for being in a shelter. I think this impacted my group and I because we felt that there was something greater that we had to do. Seeing a 15 year old girl speak at the conference about how she’s scared to tell people that she lives in a shelter because of the history she’s had was tough. I recall her saying that she use to get bullied and called names just because of her family’s financial situation. We decided to focus mostly on families and children for our topic because since we are children we know how it feels in a way, and we can connect more. I think that each fieldwork my group and I attend we should see if the person or organization we visit has any connections or recommendations for us to visit for another fieldwork project so we are always prepared and ready.
