Last week, we went to St. John’s Bread and Life. On the way there, we got a little bit lost because we did not have clear directions telling us how to get there. When we finally got off the train, a man and a woman who seemed to be married were asking people for directions. Since my mom was with us, she stopped and asked them where they were going. They did not speak much English, but they were able to communicate to us that they were also going to St. John’s Bread and Life! We walked over together to the organization. When we got there, the receptionist brought us upstairs to a big room with a lot of people inside. Some of the people were seeking help and others were volunteering. A woman named Jennifer assigned all of the volunteers specific tasks. My job was to serve food. One would not expect the food to be very appetizing, but it was! It looked and smelled much better than I was expecting. I was also surprised at the average age of the people. Many of the people in need of food were elderly. I could not imagine why their families were not giving them more support and why they were relying so heavily on charity. After serving about a hundred people, I was very tired, but on the way home, I reflected on how lucky I am to be part of a supportive extended family.
