Farewells Are In The Air

Dear Parents,

The weather is warm and the chicks have hatched!  The fourth graders are getting ready to “move up” to middle school and we just had a lovely party for Sue Ribaudo our early childhood music teacher who is retiring.  Children and teachers are feeling bittersweet as they think about saying goodbye for the summer.  They are also realizing how much they’ve learned together this year and how much the children have grown!

Elizabeth’s Kindergarten did indeed hatch chicks in an incubator as part of a bird study. They were very proud “mother hens.” Farewells are in the air for them as well. They will go to live on a farms in New Jersey this weekend. Here are some comments the children shared with me about their learning…

Zach B: It was very interesting to see them hatch.  I was happy when I found them.

Marlowe: They are not very fluffy when they first get out of their eggs.  They like to hop on the roof of the little house that we built them.

Colette: The chicks were fluffy the second day they were born.

Gus: I like watching the hummingbirds’ feet on the bird feeders in Colorado. They are tiny.

Kaya: I liked to draw my bird scroll.  I drew a bald eagle, blue heron, mallard, a goose, a pigeon, and a morning dove.  It is special because I worked really hard.

Ruby: The chicks cannot fly but they can jump high.  They like to splash in the water bowl.

Milei: They poop on their newspaper every time we change it.  They keep sitting in their food bowl.

Wyatt: I liked that the chicks are here.  I love watching them hatch.

Eli: I learned that they have a hind toe on the back of their foot.  When they drink they lift up their beak.  I saw it.

Tilda: They have to be light to fly.  We learned that in science from Elizabeth.

Have a wonderful summer,

To All Lower School Families, A note from Jesse and Stacy, Lower School Librarians:

Dear Families,

It has been wonderful having all of your children in our library this year. It is always fascinating to get to know them as readers discovering their own tastes and preferences!

We would love it if you could take the time to have one last look around your home to see if there are any books from the LREI library hiding about. If you would like to know if your child has anything left on his/her library record, please stop by the library to and speak with one of us. If you do find any books, please slide them into the slot in the front of the librarian’s desk!

Have a wonderful summer, and happy reading!

Jesse & Stacy
