Let’s all Sing!

For the past few weeks I have had the pleasure of hearing your children sing. The lower school assemblies are moments of excitement, anticipation and demonstrations of our music program in practice. After every assembly I am reminded of just how individually talented your children are. They learn songs and musical theory, but they also show us how we can use music to express our feelings and voice our opinions.

LS Fourth Grade Assembly

At LREI we have a history of singing—from folk/cultural songs to protest songs to songs that help us reflect upon light and peace during the winter season. Through song children learn about important traditions and customs from other cultures. They learn how to actively listen and use that skill to take in and process the information they need to continue to grow. Children become more grounded in their bodies through music and song and through movement exploration inspired by a variety of musical rhythms. Our children learn many things about themselves and other people around the world when they sing. They learn when we all sing together that our combined voices make beautiful music that results in very meaningful connections with each other.

As we begin this winter season, let’s follow our children’s lead and remember to sing for ourselves, for the communities we live in and for people around the world.
