Fish in a Tree
By: Lynda Mullaly Hunt
“Everyone is smart in different ways. But if judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live it’s life believing it is stupid”
-Albert Einstein
I just finished Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. This book takes place at a school and the main characters are Ally, Mr.Daniels, Keisha, Albert, Shay, Jessica and Travis. At the school where the book takes place, Ally, Keisha and Albert get teased by Shay and Jessica who are bullies. Ally is being teased because nobody thinks she is smart. She actually is smart, but in a different way. She’s better at figuring things out creatively.
It all changes when Ally gets a new teacher named Mr. Daniels who recognises her differences. At one point in the book, Mr. Daniels asks Ally, “Does reading sometimes give you headaches?” This shows that Mr. Daniels has an understanding for the fact that Ally has trouble reading. “And we were thinking that I could help you after school a couple times a week. Until we can get you into formal services here at school.’ I nod.” Mr. Daniels ends up helping Ally and it turns out Ally’s older brother Travis has the same differences as Ally so Mr. Daniels ends up helping Travis too. I enjoyed this book because of the three best friends who are very different, but are still best friends. Keisha mentions,“I like to Bake.” While a little later Albert says, “As a scientist and historian.” and much later Ally asks Mr. Daniels, “But how come I can’t read.”
I think that people who like to route for one team throughout would like this book because there are a few teams to chose from, and sometimes it can be fun to have different people to route for. I would rate this 5 out of 5 stars.
