Africans in New York: Creative Narrative Assignment

For this assignment, we were given a one page biography on a African in New York. We then had to take facts from it and incorporate them in a realistic fictional story. The person a got was John Fortune, a free black man. It was very interesting to  write from this perspective and read the biography. I learned a lot from getting a different view. I learned that life was hard even for a free black man and that it was very hard to free an enslaved person. Along with that, there was so much more that was interesting and intriguing. I learned a lot about myself doing this assignment. I know that I am very creative and I understand key concepts of Colonial America. I also know that I switch tenses a lot and my time period switches need clarification. I learned that I have a good understanding of Colonial America from multiple perspectives. I am overall happy with my piece but am planning on re-submitting it.

How People Have Resisted the Oppression of Being Scapegoated

We live in a world where sometimes innocent people are oppressed because of things they didn’t do. In spite of this, they resisted. Although this is happening today with people defying Donald Trump, it goes back to the Salem Witch Trials as well. In 1662, people were falsely accused of witchcraft and some resisted this oppression. Later in history, people continued to refuse injustice. During the Red Scare, that occurred around the 1950’s, Republican Senator Joseph McCarthy falsely accused people of being Communist and wanted others to join in on the scapegoating. Some people resisted this oppression by refusing to blame others. Throughout the history of the United States people have resisted the oppression of being scapegoated.

In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, there are a lot of examples of racial oppression and how the people resisted it. In The Crucible, Parris’s slave, Tituba, is accused of being a witch because she was a different race than them. There was a lot of racial oppression in Salem and Tituba found herself at the center of it. She gets whipped for witchcraft before they have evidence. When Tituba is later asked about compacting with the devil she says, “And then he came one stormy night to me, and he say, ‘Look! I have white people belong to me.’ And I look- and there was Goody Good,” (Miller, page 64). Tituba was the first person accused of witchcraft. When Reverend Parris’s daughter couldn’t wake up, their slave, Tituba, was the first to be questioned. Slaves were easier to blame because they were subordinate.Tituba was being oppressed because the towns folk were accusing her of witchcraft without any evidence. To refocus the accusation of witchcraft off of her and other slaves, Tituba redirects it to a white woman. By resisting racial and oppression she is helping herself and all the other slaves too.

In The Crucible, the slave Tituba resisted the oppression of being scapegoated, and so did actors, writers, and directors during the Red Scare. In the 1950’s, during the second Red Scare in the United States, citizens had to come before the senate and answer the question, “Are you now, or have you ever been, a member of the Communist party?” The more famous or popular the person was, the more likely people would follow them if they were Communist. For that reason, the government was harder on Hollywood stars. “Actors, writers, and producers alike were summoned to appear before the committee and provide names of colleagues who may have been members of the Communist Party. Those who refused to address the committee were cited for contempt. Uncooperative artists were blacklisted from jobs in the entertainment industry. Years passed until many had their reputations restored.” -ushistory.org. In the 1950’s during the second Red Scare, anticommunism played a big role in the United States. Senator Joseph McCarthy and the House of Un-Americans Committee (HUAC) oppressed American’s. They would accuse people of being Communist while there was no proof. Because Hollywood stars had a big influence on people, they were blamed more often. Citizens who would refuse to give names of Communists were blacklisted which means you might lose your job, reputation, family, or friends. Some people resisted by not giving names, and some resisted through writing things like books, such as The Crucible by Arthur Miller. To this day, people have resisted the oppression of being scapegoated in other ways too.

Currently, people are resisting to the oppression of being scapegoated in different ways. Some people are protesting Trump’s ideas, some are protesting his executive orders, and some are using their power in the government to resist to his oppression of others being scapegoated. “A federal judge in New York blocked part of Trump’s executive order on immigration, ruling that authorities could not remove individuals from seven Muslim-majority countries who had arrived in US airports after the order had been issued. Other judges had ruled against the order, as well. Sixteen Democratic state attorneys general issued a joint statement calling Trump’s move “unconstitutional, un-American and unlawful.’ ” -CNN. Donald Trump issued an executive order on January 27th, 2017, stating that people from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen can not come into the United States. Trump calls it a travel ban, although it is a ban on seven majority Muslim countries. There have been protests, and also part of the executive order was blocked because it is unconstitutional. America is resisting this and will continue to resist. The government is resisting to his oppression, and everyday people are too.

Over and over again people have resisted the oppression of scapegoating. People have defied oppression based on race, religion, and gender equality. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the slave Tituba resisted the oppression of being racially scapegoated. In the 1950’s during the Red Scare, actors, writers, directors, and other Hollywood stars fought against being scapegoated as well. In current times, people are resisting to the oppression of being scapegoated. The Judicial Branch stopped one of Trump’s executive orders, and everyday people are protesting against him. Oppression is an awful thing that has gone on throughout history, and we need to try to find a way to stop it. The world can not be a perfect utopia but this is a step in the right direction.

___________________________________________________________________________

In humanities we were assigned to write an essay comparing three time periods with one a theme. The three time periods were: the Salem Witch Trials in 1692, the McCarthy Era around the 1950’s, and modern day. My theme was resisting the oppression of being scapegoated. I learned that by learning about modern day it helps you understand about history and vice versa. There were a few challenges. One of them was my theme. I started with the broad theme “resisting oppression” and as I focused it on one point it got complex. Choosing this theme was a risk that I took and I’m glad I took it. Learning and writing about all of this has inspired me to learn more about what’s going on in our government.

When I got my grades back I was satisfied. I had good arguments and paragraph form but my analysis could have been deeper and my quotes could have been stronger. I am proud of my writing and it has improved a lot throughout the year. I am planning on re-submitting my essay to and fix some writing convention mistakes.

How To Survive a Sandstorm by Yourself

DadiScreenshot 2016-05-06 at 10.50.37 AM

Hello, my name is Dalil Abassi. My family knows me by Dadi, though.  I am a Chalistani Nomad. I live with my wife, two daughters (one named Shabanu, and the other Phulan), my father (who is a Jindwadda Ali Abassi troop), my sister in law, and her two sons. It is a full house and I haven’t even mentioned the camels yet. We earn our money by breeding and selling our fine camels. We had to sell even our best recently to pay for my daughter’s dowry’s and weddings. Phulan is getting wed this summer, and Shabanu, the summer after that. We have recently experienced an extremely bad sandstorm and my father got lost in it. We eventually found him very ill, and barely alive.

Part 1: How to know when a sandstorm is coming.

If there isa sandstorm, you will see a big cloud of fog that looks like it’s been covered with dust. The atmosphere will be hazy and it will be hard to see.

Part 2: What to do if there is a sandstorm.

Step 1: Get everything to safety.

If you see a sandstorm coming and you are alone, you need to get everything that can’t get dirty inside your mud hut. If you don’t, valued stuff might get buried under mounds of dirt and sand. They will be hard to find, and if you need them, you will be in big trouble. That’s why I suggest doing it fast.

Step 2: Close everything off.

Get a big tarp that can cover your entrance and secure it so the sand and dust will not get in.

Step 3: Wait it out.

Even if you have a family member out in the storm, it would be best if you didn’t chase after them. If you do, your face and skin will be very dehydrated and will start cracking and you will have to heal it. Also, dust will fill your lungs and throat and you will not be able to breathe which will cause you to suffocate. Stay calm and the storm will be over soon enough.

Step 4: When the storm’s over.

When the storms over, don’t start to unpack right away. Put a piece of cloth over your head and one over your nose and mouth, and peek your head outside your hut. If the storm is clear within 15 miles, it is safe to go outside. Once it is approximately 30 miles away, you can unpack, but you have to be careful still.

Yanks Fans by, Marlo

In humanities yesterday, we learned about two different types of poems. First we learned about haiku’s. Haiku’s are three lined poems. On the first line there are five syllables. On the second, eight, and on the third, five. Haiku’s are usually about nature, but they don’t have to be. Then, we learned about cinquain poems. There are three formats for cinquain poems.

Cinquain Type 1:

Line 1: 1 word

Line 2: 2 words

Line 3: 3 words

Line 4: 4 words

Line 5: 1 word

Cinquain Type 2:

Line1: 1 noun

Line 2: 2 adjectives

Line 3: 3 -ing words

Line 4: 1 phrase

Line 5: Another word for the noun

Cinquain Type 3:

Line1: 2 syllables

Line2: 4 syllables

Line 3: 6 syllables

Line 4: 8 syllables

Line 5: 2 syllables

After leaning about cinquians and haikus, we  wrote our own poems. The one I wrote was a cinquain type 3.

Really?

Are you a Yank?

You Yanks fans are nasty

How can you stand it? Met’s for life

Who The Heck Are YOU? (In Progress)

In humanities we are working on a project called ” Who The Heck Are You?” We interview somebody and then write a article about them.

The first thing we did was come up with five people we wanted to interview. I chose Rachel Platten, but I could not get in touch with her on time. I went with my back-up, and did my cousin, Daniel. I have not interviewed him yet, I’m doing it tonight. After that I will write about him.

Khadijah Presentation

For humanities this week everyone got a packet on a medieval women. My group got Khadijah, but since her packet was short, we got two other people too. One’s name was Rabi’a al-Adawiya, and  the other one’s was named Zubayda. After reading the packets and learning about the women, we had to make a presentation. In our presentation, we had to have a slide about something that we researched. We researched Sufism. This project helped me as a learner because I got to experience making a presentation about something I learned.

Arabian Nights Story Revision Reflection

Revision means making changes in the story, like in the story arc, character, description, or the theme of the story. Mechanical editing is grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

After my first draft, Julia left a comment saying to tell a story instead of summarizing it(the horse tells a story in the story). It also wasn’t so clear and descriptive so I had to make it more descriptive so it was clearer.

My Thanksgiving Piece

I’m proud that I got to share my Thanksgiving piece at the Thanksgiving assembly. I’m proud because it was a really good piece and only some of the best pieces were shared. I learned that to do your best work you have to give yourself breaks to let your mind think about it. I can continue to do my best work by doing that.

My piece:

Every Thanksgiving I go to my grandparent’s farm in Millbrook, NY.  When I went there last year it was snowing. My cousin (Daniel) and I were watching Thanksgiving football along with my dad and two of my uncles. We were sitting by the fireplace with the smell of the wood burning and the sound of the crackle of the embers were like music to my ears. I could also smell the turkey, mashed potatoes, the stuffing and all the satisfying food we would usually have. I turned around and saw that my brother and my cousin Lexi were sledding in the backyard. It looked like fun! I turned and tapped Daniel. I pointed to the sleds and I said, “Want to go sledding?” I knew his response.

We both bolted through the door and flew up the stairs. We threw on our snow pants, jacket, and snow boots, and then we shot down the stairs to get our hats and gloves. We raced towards the track and my brother and cousin left. We had it all to ourselves, I had never had anything to myself before (at least not since my brother was born.) It gave me this pleasant feeling, thinking of when my brother wasn’t around. He has always been annoying, he always started hitting me randomly for no reason. It was nice to have some peace and quiet for once. Daniel started standing on the sled so he could get on but I pushed the sled forwards. He went flying face first into the snow. I started laughing hysterically and ran over to roll him down towards the frozen lake. I threw a snowball at him and he jumped up and threw snow at me. Eventually my grandma put her head out the back door and yelled, “Dinner time!” We both looked at each other while we dropped our snowballs on the ground. We both bolted through the door and flew up the stairs again so we wouldn’t be late for dinner. We wanted the good stuff! We arrived there right on time for our food and devoured it all while sitting at the table next to each other. It was the best Thanksgiving ever!
