I think that the most challenging part was making sure your paper stays neat and nothing smudges. This is a challenge because when you are drawing  sometimes you rub your hand against the paper and it smudges, and when you erase you could erase your work or bend the paper. I think that for me I have some trouble keeping my paper white.

My Ideas:

I think that this letter is very interesting. I notice that schooling has a lot to do with you social status because The higher you are differs what you learn. For example you learn how to dance and sing the higher you are because it tells a story about your family and yourself. What I am trying to say is that dancing shows your knowledge and that is to them would be just as important as writing. I am not so sure about reading because you need to be able to read the bible because  them the bible represents God which was one of the most important things to almost everyone. I wonder if the neighbors would go to school with them? I can infer they did not because they were such a big and rich family, so there was no point to have other kids learn if they weren’t in the family. I notice that kids are all learning different things.I wonder if the kids did their lessons with any help? I can infer they did because most of their lessons  seemed to not be very progressive. I think that it must of taken longer for kids to learn. I think that they thought that kids should get a book and just learn about things themselves. I think that this letter really show what rich families education would be. I wonder why learning latin was so important? I can infer it ran in the family because I do not think everyone would learn Latin. I notice tah they also talk a lot about math I think that math was also very important so you can run a business.

Making Thirteen Colonies Homework

Directions: Read chapter 2 in Making Thirteen Colonies. Answer the following questions below. Use complete sentences. The following assignment is due on Friday, September 16th.

Questions:

What are the characteristics of the “gentlemen” as described in this reading? (Please be detailed in your description). How do they differ from “younkers?”

  

Being a gentleman was probably based on luck. If you were born into a rich family, you get the privilege of not having to care about work, so you get to go on journeys and hopefully try and find some gold. If you go on these journeys you get Younkers to come with you. Younkers are cheap helpers on the boat that were great for going on journeys because young people love to explore. It says on p.19, “ If a younker fell in the ocean and was lost well, too bad.” It a younker fell in the water no one would care, but if a gentlemen  fell in everyone would be freaking out and they would probably make younkers jump in to save them. Obviously, one trait of gentlemen is helpless. A gentleman is not able to do anything  except demand, they may be able to travel in a boat, but their money carries them through life. This brings up the topic that gentlemen are very spoiled and  probably Elegant. it says on page 18,”Their puffed knee pants, their silk stockings, their feathered hats, their gaudy blouses.” this proves that they are spoiled because if you are going on a journey you do not need silk stocking.The younkers are the opposite, they feel very lucky just to be able to go on a journey and see the magnificent sights.

Take a closer look at the picture of page 19 and the caption that accompanies it. How are people in London imagining the New World based on what this picture shows? Be specific and be sure to reference the picture.

The Europeans thought America to be somewhat of a utopia or Garden of Eden. This was a very high expectation to be putting on a land they have never gone to. It says on page 19, “It had to be full of animals known to Europeans only from myths.” They thought they were going to be in God’s paradise with God’s stories, it was paradise. On the other side of the picture was war and fire, a dystopia. It was filled with men shooting arrows and people dying and the Europeans sat in peace singing, frolicking, and resting. They thought God created a shield from the real world, like a big wall in the way of all bad people or sinners. They could watch all of the vile violent things and not be a part of them. They could explore the area and pick flowers in their utopia. They would have everything. In the picture it also shows That all of their plants are growing and they have tons of fish to eat. It also seem like they Europeans don’t have to kill all of their animals because all of their crops like wheat are growing nicely, and they have fish.

How well prepared would you say this group of men and boys was for the challenges of a new and unfamiliar land? Do you predict success or failure for this company’s colonizing attempts at this point? Why? Be sure to use textual evidence and analysis. Quotes

I think that their attempt to go a new land was a success because they did make it to a land. They found Spaniards and defeated them. Like it says on page 19,”Newport had led an Expedition that destroyed or captured twenty Spanish vessels and sacked four towns in the West Indies and florida.” This proves that they are going to have a great journey because they are ready fight for this land. It says on page 20, “That was its beauty and abundance.” I think the quote definitely describes what they thought of this place. I think they will colonize well because they are determined to have a new home.( also because I think that is what we are studying!) Another thing is that they are a very strong community. They probably have a lot of stumbles like the cold, bare, and frozen winter and maybe even famine. This could be a challenge for them, but I am sure they did well to make a community. I do not think that they were prepared for this journey at first but it says on page 20, “ Captain Newport soon had them in Canary island, where they got fresh water and food.” This proves that they were not ready at the beginning because they did not know how far they needed to go, but they got more supplies and they were very prepared for new things to come. Overall I think they did well on this journey and are sure to succeed.

            Is Ignorance Bliss?

Imagine a world where everyone is ignorant. .  In the book The Giver by Lois Lowry not everything is as perfect as it seems. This book is about a boy named Jonas that changes his community for happiness of everyone. He lives in a controlled life until he turns twelve. When he is 12 he receives his job that no normal kid would get, and while he is learning from the Giver he notices all the pain and joy of being knowledgeable. In the process he notices all of the horrible things that has happened in the past. He notices that no one should live in bliss and starts to rebel. He gets help to break the orderly fashion. This society is a utopia and dystopia because everyone is kept safe and no one has pain, but it is unfair because everyone has no emotion and is controlled in the bliss that they are in.

In the community the Elders keep everyone ignorant. The Elders take away pain, memories, and knowledge to keep everyone in bliss. They have rituals that only the Elders understand in an effort to contain happiness. For example they keep everyone ignorant by not telling them what “release” really means. Lowry writes on page 2, “Needless to say, he will be released, the voice had said, followed by silence. There was a ironic tone to that final message, as if the speaker found it amusing; And Jonas smiled a little, though he new what a grim statement it had been,”(Giver P.2). Since Jonas smiled a little, he definitely did not know that release means death. This proves that everyone is ignorant because they do not know what punishments you get. Without knowing all the horrible and painful things, that makes them feel safe, but that also means they don’t have very much joy; they are locked away from emotions. Performing rituals and keeping people ignorant maintains happiness and organization, but it traps everyone in a place where they rely on other people because they are in bliss and blindly following the order. This makes it  easier for people to live so therefor it could also be a good thing because everyone feel safe and does not know of the real troubles of life. The community is kept ignorant, but the select people who contain memories have all the power and knowledge.

In the Community the Elders have all the knowledge. Select Elders keep memories like the Giver and the Receiver. Jonas learned that having all of the pain and other memories opens you up to a new colorful world. Jonas gets a lot of the knowledge from the Giver and notices the pain and joy of knowing. Lowry says on page  102, “There are so many good memories, the giver reminded Jonas. And it was true. By now Jonas had experienced countless bites of happiness,”(Giver p.102). The Giver is giving memories to Jonas and he is learning and getting happiness. These feelings that Jonas is getting are making him knowledgeable. Jonas not only is smart because of books, but all of the memories he gets makes him wise and able to see the real world. This could be a bad thing because he has all the horrible pain of war and other horrid things. After he saw that memory he had a lot of trouble seeing the world the same. Jonas and the Giver are very knowledgeable because they hold all of the memories.

Everyone in Jonas’s community is kept in bliss to protect the happiness and safety of the community. But in the process of keeping the community perfect, horrible things happen behind everyone’s backs. Knowledge is a good thing to have, but sometimes you can run into challenges which is what this community is trying to stray from. Ignorance is certainly bliss, there is no pain, no war, but ignorance also take away all of the joys. Jonas was happy until he saw horrible things of the outside, but while seeing some painful sights he notices all the joy that he is not getting to live for. If joy, pain, and knowledge is what makes life a unique utopia, then is it worth living in a “utopia”?

I think that my muir web is very creative. I added pictures, colors, and words. I wrote about my steak dinner. crissoant, and turkey sandiwich. I think that I added a lot to my web. I think that I could of made my web better by adding more connections and going deeper in to the food and how they are made.

I think that I understood this because I could do the math really well. Sometimes I have trouble remembering annotations. I know them now because  I learned them by writing them again and again.I think that I understand  overall how to do this  work.
