Categories Activity (for some friendly class competition):

1. Ask kids to get into groups (with those they rarely work with, or with advisories, tables, birthday months, random, etc.)

2. Choose a category (start simple and build up) such as rivers around the world, state capitals, breeds of dogs, types of vegetables, types of shoes, young adult book authors, office supplies, etc. Working in small groups students have a limited amount of time to brainstorm as many examples as they can for the category.

3. Someone in the group should write down the answers and others can be the spokespeople. When the time is up, groups share out loud and earn top points for the most accurate answers (point systems can vary).

4. Continue for more rounds, if possible.
