Here’s That Rainy Day (Elijah M)

Artist Statement:

This project covers Here’s That Rainy Day, a jazz ballad written by Jimmy Van Heusen and Johnny Burke that was published in 1953. Our pianist, Elijah Meltzer, reharmonized the chord progression. A reharmonization is changing the chords behind the same melody. To do this, we used concepts like chromaticism, tritone substitution, backdoor 2-5-1 progressions, and chord extensions.  The song was not recorded in one session. Rather, each instrument was recorded separately, starting with the piano, followed by the drums, and lastly the bass. Audio mix was done on Logic to invoke a live recording session at the Village Vanguard.
