Project by: Henry Pomerance (10th Grade), Nate Simon (10th Grade)
Faculty Advisor: Stephen MacGillivray
Context:
Henry and I think the script basically speaks for itself. We were trying to think of something we could shoot with our friends, as well as something that we wanted to write, and we settled on this story of a kid losing a pen and forcing two detectives to find it, but not telling them about the pen.
Please write a description of the project you are proposing. Why do you want to take this on, and what do you hope to learn?
Nate and I would be continuing this honors project from trimester 2. This past trimester, we brainstormed an idea for a short film (roughly 30 pages), wrote the script for it, and edited it. However, we wanted to take our project further by filming parts of the movie, which we would do in trimester 3. Filming would further immerse us in our movie, and would also let us explore the moviemaking process more deeply. We hope to learn more about filming in general; making different shots convey different emotions, when to use a close up or wide shot, and how to get the most out of actors are a few main ideas.
What is your proposed outcome? How will you be able to demonstrate successful completion of this Project?
We plan to have filmed, recorded sound for, and edited at least one major scene in our short film. We will have successfully completed our project if our scene(s) demonstrate to the viewer that all our shots have a purpose and the story is linear.
When do you plan on meeting?
Friday and/or Monday at x-block
Reflection:
Looking back (and it’s been almost a full year) this was a lot harder than we thought it would be. We initially thought to write a 10 page script and to shoot the whole thing, then decided to write a 30 page script and shoot part of it. While we did that, the stuff we shot wasn’t very good and we aren’t very proud of it. It was much harder to shoot than we had expected and we didn’t plan everything out so well. We wrote the script and shot listed, but all of our audio was very noisy and it didn’t look very good visually.
As far as the script goes, we worked well together, both writing and editing as we went. We didn’t really go through multiple drafts of the script (which shows) and if we went back to write the script now, it would probably look and sound very different.
Overall, we had a good time with this honors project and learned some valuable lessons about planning and having realistic expectations.
