Description of the Project:

For our honors project, we’re going to be examining the local NYC elections, with the primaries coming up on June 22nd. We researched the different candidates and their policies in the context of the Juniors’ DIA classes. We wanted to gain a deeper understanding of the race and its candidates and so we could share our knowledge with our community.

Reflection:

In the end, we were able to gain an in-depth understanding of the mayoral candidates and their stances on the issues that are important to us. It was fascinating to learn about them in the context of what we have been learning in class and we feel very lucky to have a broadened knowledge of the race and the future leader of our city. We like Kathryn Garcia the best of all the candidates. She is by far the most experienced and it is about time that our city had a female leader. Though some of her stances could be up for debate she is the only candidate that we feel has the experience and capabilities to make any real change in our city. This has been a very insightful project and we are anticipating the results of the primaries. Make sure to vote on June 22nd!

Update on Progress from Weeks 1-3 (include any photos or video if relevant):

From weeks 1-3, we mostly focussed on exploring what rank choice voting is and the effect it will have on the election. We read articles and did research to learn about how rank choice voting works, and the ways that it can make an election results better reflect people’s choices. By the end, we had met with Ann and discussed our final project, which we had decided would be a slideshow with the different candidates’ stances on the DIA topics.

Update on Progress from Weeks 4-6 (include any photos or video if relevant):

From weeks 4-6, we began doing research for our slideshow. We looked into the eight frontrunners and their stances on the environment, healthcare, and guns, and policing. From there, we created comprehensive lists of their most important stances and policy ideas. We also worked on the formatting of our slideshow in order to make it aesthetically pleasing and easy to read.

Update on Progress from Weeks 7-9 (include any photos or video if relevant):

In the final weeks of the project, we completed the slideshow and shared it. We wrote out each of the candidate’s stances on Media and Technology and LGBTQ+ rights, as well as writing summary sentences for each of the issues. Once we finished the slideshow it was shared with all of the juniors in their DIA classes, the principals, Phil, and Ann’s tenth-grade history class.
