Remembering 100 years through the stories of Suffragettes

Project by: Grace Burns (10th Grade)
Project Advisor: Ann Carroll
Student(s)’s Advisor(s): Pat Higgiston

Description of the Project:

Over the course of this trimester, I have met with Ann every week and created a four-part podcast series. Each episode highlights a different suffragette that desperately lacks adequate acknowledgment. I am really proud of my end result and all the research I ingested to make these episodes. The information I learned will definitely stay with me once this trimester ends because of its importance and my passion and dedication to the topic it’s self. I started this project because I knew that I wanted to take my interest in history to the next level and develop a greater understanding of the history of feminism in America and the progress that has been made. I decided on dedicating this podcast to the suffragettes because this year celebrated the hundredth anniversary of the amendment. I am unquestionably walking away from this project with more knowledge of the suffrage movement but also a more complex “single-story” that I entered this trimester with.

Final Product (e.g., documents, images, video, audio, poster, display, etc.):

Final Reflection on Learning:

I chose podcasting as my choice of media because I felt it would allow me to learn about extraordinary women and help to educate others as well. This form of story telling is intimate and accessible and I feel that it invites the listener in in a way that is unique and personal. While researching stories of suffragettes I learned about so many pioneers whose stories should be known. It was a challenge to just pick four. I think that this series could and should continue. Maybe I could continue to work on the next chapter of this projects this year or another student could build upon them and bring their perspective into it too.
