During the concert, we did a good job as a group at harmonizing in seasons of love. I was most proud of all of us memorizing the Greek song because we didn’t spend a long time learning it. One of our challenges was the whole song of Africa.

Winter Concert
Last night was the Winter Concert. I am in Vocal Majors and we sang five songs. It wasn’t very good, but we worked really hard on it so it felt good when it was over. I liked listening to the rest of the people sing and play. It made me want to do more in high school.
My first field work blog post
Name: Grace Burns
Social Justice Group: Maternal/Fetal Care
Date of Fieldwork: November 3, 2017
Name of Organization: Changing Woman’s Initiative
Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Nicolle Gonzales the founder of Changing Woman’s Initiative
Type of Fieldwork: Interview
What I did:
We went to the Every Mother Counts counts office and spoke with Nicolle Gonzales. First, we packed marathon energy boost bags for the marathon and then we listened to her speak about how she grew up on the Navajo reservation and then she talked about her motivation and her goals. After that, we got to ask all the other questions that she didn’t answer.
What I learned:
We learned about the struggle of giving birth of a reservation. There is only one hospital on the reservation and for some people its over 3 miles away from where they live so women are constantly giving birth in the back of their car and missing the celebration of giving birth.
What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:
Throughout this fieldwork I learned that the Navajo reservations are very ignored. There are so many tribes that aren’t even registered which means the government doesn’t give them money for running water, schools, and hospitals. These people are not being granted equal treatment as people who live in Manhattan like us.
