Summer Reading: Little Women
Summer Reading: Murder on the Orient Express, by Agatha Christie
Trees
Trees
Tall proud
Pitching swinging dancing,
In the wind
Endlessly
I wanted to write a poem about nature, and I looked out the window and saw the trees moving in the win so I wrote a poem about trees. It is a cinquain. That means that it has a noun on the first line, two adjectives on the second, three ¨Ing¨ words on the third. a short phrase on the fourth, and then one word that sums up the noun. I would definitely say that line breaks are a big part of this. There is also a little rhythm. I liked the way this turned out and I think it has a really nice flow. I think that I used good descriptive words and gives it a nice picture. This is one of my favorite poems that I wrote.
The Year Throughout
The Year Throughout
Red leaves, falling leaves,
Raining more leaves, Yellow leaves,
Brown leaves, goodbye leaves.
Snow, Ice, Sleet, Frost, Hail,
Laid out like a huge sno-cone.
“Huh” Here comes the sun.
Rain pummels the ground
The street is paved once again
The flowers will bloom
Summer is ice cream
It’s sprinting out to short-stop
Summer is my life
This was a set of four Haikus and there was one for each season. There are a lot of poems about seasons, but I wanted one for all four in order, to show the flow of the year. A haiku is a poem about nature, that has 5 syllables on the first line, 7 on the second, and 5 again on the third. I would say that line breaks are a big part of my poem. There is also rhythm and repetition in the autumn one, repetition in the summer one, and imagery in the spring and winter ones. I really like the way it turned out, and I think it was a good idea for a set of 4 poems. I like how different all my poems are, and I also like the flow that it gives throughout the year.
Favorite Art Piece
This was my favorite art piece this year because I like doing things in 3-D. I loved working with wire and just shoving everything into place, and then being gentle with the small parts. I think that I came into it with an open mind which helped me because I could do a lot more. I loved this project.
Final Map Project
I would like to name this piece of art “The Globe Of NYC”. I created this work of art by blowing up a balloon and then paper mache-ing around it with a map of NYC. Then I popped the balloon and painted over the map with mod-podge. Then I painted NYC on it. One thing I learned while creating it was that you need a thick coat of paper mache so that the shell will stay hard. If I could change something I would try to add more of the actual map, not just words on the map. While making this, I was surprised that heat could pop a balloon and I was halfway done with the paper mache, so I had to insert a new balloon into that shell and that’s why it looks lopsided.
Poetry Breakfast Poems
I am using a set of four haikus; one for each season.

Mandarin Pen Pal Letter
In Mandarin, the 8th graders wrote pen pal letters to us, and we all responded to ones of our choice. We
answered their questions, and asked some of our own. This was a great way to use everything that we have
learned so far. We included almost all of our units in these letters. I think this has been a great year for me in
mandarin class. Here is my letter:
