Shabanu Character Post- Shabanu

It’s not fair, how women get treated differently. We don’t get to chose anything, it is just the father or husband who rules everything. I love Dadi, but I wish Mama, Auntie, Phulan and I could have our rights too. I want to be like Sharma- she chose to leave her husband without anyone telling her she could and she is the most powerful woman I’ve ever met. “Anyone who might want to harm Sharma should think twice; she is better able to take care of herself than most men are.” I am not sure if I want to marry or not yet. If I was to marry, I am very lucky because Murad and Hamir are wealthy. They own land and have a decent amount of money. It would be hard to turn down an opportunity like this, even if I had the power to refuse. But Hamir and Murad could be dead right now, fighting for Phulan’s safety. But most importantly I don’t want to follow Dadi’s rules, I want to follow mine. “I am angry to think of Dadi or anyone else telling me what to do . I want to tell her I spend more time with the camels than Dadi, and sometimes when he asks me to do a thing, I know something else is better.” Page 28

Poem Reflection

HVC

Miss you, HVC

Summer time is very near

But spring just began

This poem is a haiku, a haiku is a poem with three stanzas. The first stanza has five syllables, the second has seven syllables and the third has five syllables. Haiku’s are usually about nature and beauty, but I wrote a poem about my camp. I decided to write a poem about my camp because it’s a really special place for me and I want to remember it in a poem. I usually write poems about special places or things to me.

The explanation for this poem is: The first stanza means- I am missing my camp, HVC (Hidden Valley Camp.)

The second stanza means- Summer time is really close, that means that camp is really close.

The third stanza means- Spring just started so, that means I have a little amount of time until its time for camp.

Structure Fits Function

Functions for Nails:

  • Protection
  • Attack

Structure:

  • Making smaller movements more precise
  • It makes the finger tip more sensitive
  • Protecting the finger tips

Have you ever wondered about what makes up you nail? The structure of the nail is very simple.

If you look at your finger nail, you will see that part of the nail covers your nail bed and part of your nail that sticks out.

The part of the nail that sticks out (the white part of your nail)  is called the free edge of the nail.  The part of the nail that is covering your nail bed is called the body of the nail.

These are some of the functions of the nail:

  • The free edge of the nail makes smaller movements more precise. For example, if you were picking up a needle, the free edge of the nail would be useful.
  • The body of the nail is helpful because it protects the sensitive finger tips.  It also allows the fingertips to be more sensitive.
  • The lunula is actually under your nail, if something/someone hurts the lunula, your nail will be deformed.

Art Q3

Fabric Collage

One of the project’s we made in quarter three is the Fabric Collage. We all made fabric collages based on our medieval guilds, I am in the Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker Guild. I really enjoyed this project and working with fabric. It wasn’t really challenging for me, but was easy. These are the steps of me making the Fabric Collage.

Geometric Pattern

We made Geometric Patterns because in the medieval ages, people had to make geometric patterns out of tiles for designs on the walls. This project was especially challenging for me because figuring out how to use the circle tool was really hard for me. Also using the exacto knife was hard for me, this project wasn’t one my strong points.

Illuminated Letter

In the medieval ages people drew illuminated letters in books for the first letter. For this project, we drew our own illuminated letters, we could use any material we wanted. For example, I used watercolor. I think this was the project I enjoyed the most in the third quarter. I wasn’t hard or easy for me. I didn’t really have any difficulties, I think I was the most successful in this project.

Mandarin Q3 Reflection

This is our Chinese New Year performance.

This year, each grade who studies Mandarin, comes together and we all have performances or projects that we share. The sixth grade did tai chi, we got about a month to practice it.

This is my “Who the Heck is This? (zhe shi shei?)” project.

This is the translation to this- He is Chinese, he is a man. He has black hair. He has long hair. His hair is a little bit curly, a little bit straight. His favorite colors are blue and orange. He isn’t tall he isn’t short. His Chinese is very good. His English is also very good. He has one mom, one dad. He doesn’t have a older sister, a older brother, a younger sister and a younger brother.

This is the pin yin to this project- ta shi zhong guo ren, ta shi nan ren. ta you hei se de tou fa. ta you chang de tou fa. ta de tou fa yi dian juan, yi dian zhi. ta zui xihuan de yan se shi lan se he cheng se de. ta bu gao bu ai. ta de zhong wen shuo de hen hao. ta de ying wen shuo de yei hen hao. ta you yi ge mama, yi ge baba. ta mei you mama, baba, meimei, he didi.

In the “Who the Heck is This?” project, we chose a person to write a description about only in characters. We then read aloud our description of the person to the class, and the class would guess who this person is. I described Xin.

Style Composition

I chose to do jazz because I’ve always liked jazz, I wanted to try making a jazz piece. I had trouble researching jazz musicians because I barely knew about them and jazz history, but I learned about jazz while researching. I think that my drum beat goes really well with the rest of my piece and is very jazzy. I feel like my A section goes with all the other instruments in it. Also, I really like my ending but I think I can work on it a bit more. I have been stumped in while doing my piece and I don’t feel like my piece is “jazzy.”

Who the Heck are You?

In the third quarter we interviewed people who we chose. This particular interview is called “Who the Heck are You?” In this interview we interviewed anyone we wanted. I choose Jessica, my Chinese tutor, I wanted to know more about her and what college was like since she just got out of college. There was a couple of steps to this interview… The first step is writing a letter. We all wrote a letter to our person asking if we could interview them. After we wrote the letter we listed ten or more questions to ask during our interview. Of course they won’t always say yes, so we were prepared and wrote our top five people who we also wanted to interview. Here are my questions,

  1. What is college like?
  2. Who is your role model? Why?
  3. What did you want to be when you were a kid? Why?
  4. What is your heritage?
  5. What was your major and why did you choose it?
  6. If you could go back in time to 6th grade what advice would you give your 6th grade self?
  7. What made you want to start dancing?
  8. What do you want to be? Considering that you will be too old to do dance. Why?
  9. What did you do to get into such a good college?
  10. What were some of the hardest things you had to deal with?

I think the questions turned out really well. I really liked the answer to, “If you could go back in time to 6th grade what advice would you give your 6th grade self?” Here is my interview-

I actually really liked my interview, I think it turned out really great. I thought that it was really fun and it got to know much more about her. I am glad that I chose Jessica to be my interviewee she had a-lot of helpful comments and I liked knowing how it was like for her when she was my age and how college was like. I got her to say things that she wouldn’t say usually.

Once we did the interview we followed the directions to a doc called “Interviews and Ideas Template (Step 2)”. This doc helps you put down your ideas in four parts. It helps you organize it into four parts. This template helps you with your final piece. It is just notes but helps you get the outline of your final. It first asks you to jot down a few quotes that you really like, or are interesting. Right after that, it has the begging. In the begging you try grab the readers attention so that they read on. You should always had a grabber statement which is the very first sentence. For example: “Are you trying to find out who you are? Well, read on and you’ll find Jessica’s story of finding out who she really is, in college.” Try to grab your reader attention. There’s also the middle and the end. In the middle, you have the bulk. The bulk has all interesting information. It also has the most. In the end, you can end with your favorite part of the interview. For example I ended with my favorite quote, “Don’t let your happiness be in the hands of someone else.”

After we have finished part 2 we started on our final piece. The final has all the steps put together into one doc. It has been peer/self edited. This is my final doc:

Are you trying to find out who you are? Well, read on and you’ll find Jessica’s story of finding out who she really is, in college. “It’s a great time to explore things that you’re interested about, exploring yourself, even.” Jessica Li is a professional dancer in New York City. In this interview, you could learn some advice from her, for living life. Jessica has lots of wisdom to share even though she is only twenty three years old.

Jessica is my Chinese tutor or teacher. I really enjoy having her as a teacher, I always have fun in our classes and I learn much from her. Jessica is now one of my new role models! Jessica is from Concord, Massachusetts. She grew up in America but her parents are Chinese and spoke Mandarin with her when she was growing up. So she grew up bilingual. While Jessica was in college, she found dance when she was twenty years old. Jessica describes it as a total accident. She once stepped into a social class where she learned some dance moves, and started to love it. She started taking it very seriously and found it to be her new passion.

If she hadn’t discovered that class, she wouldn’t be here doing what she does now. “After I discovered dance, it was very clear to me that all the other things that I was doing (that I was pursuing) because I thought that I was, you know, “passionate” about them, all of those things paled in comparison to dance.” Jessica had many other passions that she was pursuing that she felt, were going to be her future. To put it into a shorter way, Jessica is saying, don’t assume your first passion will become your future. You may find something that inspires you even more than your passion now. So Jessica came to pursue her dream, and that is why she is here in New York, dancing.

Jessica worked very hard in school and managed to get into the highly respected college, Harvard.“Throughout my Middle School and High School career I basically put everything that I had into whatever I was interested in and made sure if I had a goal, that I did everything in my power to reach that goal and produce a result and I think that’s what really helped me get into college. These people at Harvard could see that I not only did I have a  passion but that I had the ability to make my goals into reality.” Jessica grew up in a predominantly white community and when she was a kid she was very isolated because she was one of the only Asian people who were living there. Even though people were picking on her, Jessica put everything into her dreams and worked very hard to get into such a good college. Harvard saw that Jessica’s ambition about her goals were very powerful, and that drove her to accomplish her objectives. Jessica had many dreams, many passions that she was very passionate about. She chose dance over more traditional careers because she chose to follow what she wanted to do the most. What she loved. Even though it was a very difficult path or career that is hard to succeed at.

“Don’t let your happiness be in the hands of someone else,” said Jessica. This quote inspires me to live life happily. Whenever I am worried I can look back at this quote and be reminded to think about what’s important in life and what’s not. Jessica is an inspiring and interesting person and the words she speaks moved me. I learned that age does not equal wisdom. Even though Jessica is only twenty three she may have more wisdom than someone older than her. Jessica was picked on because she is Asian but she somehow overcame it through her own internal beliefs. Because Jessica is also Chinese, she is a good role model to me and I admire her more because she succeeded despite the racism she experienced. Jessica taught me that the world is large and I can exist in at least two different worlds. I am very grateful that I can live in an American world and a Chinese world.

I had a lot of fun doing this and I hope that we soon get to do another interview project!

Butcher Baker Candlestick Maker Guild

Yesterday, Wednesday. We got into our guilds, I got into the Butcher Baker Candlestick Maker Guild. In the Butcher Baker Candlestick Maker Guild, we embroider, cook, and grow our own garden. On the first meeting we drew out our character’s initials, which we are later going to embroider. My initials are H W that stands for, Hazel Woodwind. After that we researched medieval recipes and plants, our next meeting we are going to go out to the spice shop and grow them in our garden. After that we learned how to embroider and started to embroider our initials. Later on, we are going to cook the recipes that we found, and cook with our spices we grow. We are going to start growing the spices in the science lab, which will be our garden. We are going to grow them from seeds to spices and or plants. I am really happy that I got into this guild, and really excited for the next meets!

3rd Quarter Goals

I think the thing that I need to work on the most is listening and participating. Listening in class connects to my goals because I blank out in class and I don’t get all the information I need. I also need to participate in class, that connects to my goal of listening in class because I need to get the information to raise my hand. I am setting a goal to raise my hand once or twice a class and raise my hand when I get an idea.

Another goal I have is to stand up for myself. I way I can try to fix this is by speaking up to the person who is being mean to me or don’t let that person take over me and stress me. I am having a lot of trouble with this goal but I think I can fix it if I have enough time.

Math Demonstration

26)

40=20% of what number?

What number = 20% X 40?

20/40= 200.

Colette has 40 cookies and wants to split them with 5 people. Colette needs to find 20% of the 40 cookies so she can split them evenly. How many cookies does everyone get?

27)

8 1/2% of $500.00= what number?

8 1/2= 8.50

8.50 X $500.00= 42.500000

Colette wants to buy something that costs 8 1/2 times as much as the money she has been saving up, $500.00. How can Colette find how much money she needs?

28)

18 = what percent of 150?

What percent = 18/150?

18/150 = 00.12%

Colette has 18 pieces of paper and wants to split it with 150 people but there won’t be enough pieces of paper for everyone. Colette needs to find what percent of the piece of paper to give to everyone. What percent of the paper will everyone get?
