What is the Green New Deal?

The Green New Deal is a congressional resolution that proposes a plan for how the U.S. can tackle climate change. It was proposed by Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Senator Edward J. Markey of Massachusetts. It calls for the government to cut back on the use of fossil fuels and planet-warming emissions. It’s goal is to make the world net zero emissions by 2050 – meaning that the world would be emitting as  much Co2 as it is absorbing – and the United States must help to the fullest. If everything goes as planned, the sponsors argue it will introduce new high paying jobs in clean energy industries into the economy. We do not know the exact numbers on how much it would cost. President Trump said it would cost $100 trillion while it supporters say it will be equally costly to not tackle climate change. So far no critics have offered alternative proposals. It will be voted on by congress.
