Have you ever heard of a Sugar Glider? This foreign animal comes from Australia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea. It is only 6.3 to 8.3 inches long and 14.1 to 5.6 ounces, which translates to 0.88125 or 0.35 pounds. To put in perspective it is about the size of your palm. They are mammals and their diet consists of plants, making them omnivores. Sugar Gliders do in fact have “wings” that stretch from their fifth forefinger and their back ankle. Their bushy tails are known for acting as a steering wheel when they glide through the air. It is made out of a thin layer of skin, much like a flying squirrel’s wings. They can live up to 3 – 9 years in the wild. Which may not seem like a long time but for such a small delicate animal it is. They feed on nectar, pollen, acacia, and eucalyptus tree sap. They’ve also been seen searching tree cones for spiders and beetles. Sugar Gliders are very aware, curious, energetic, and entertaining pets. Sugar Gliders are bred animals and many people have them as pets. FUN FACT: They are called “Sugar Gliders” because they love eating sugar.
