Presidential Debate In class
This Wednesday the fifth grade had an “election.” We were split into our 1,2,3 groups by class. After we got into groups we choose a topic to write a speech about. Then we got to run against our classmates. The choices were: Education, Economics, and Environment. Each group would choose one to go deeper into. We also had to research the topic so we could eventually make a speech about it. But first we each had to choose a candidate in our group. The candidate would write most of the speech and speak when it was time. They would make all of the big decisions for the campaign group. Aside from the choosing the candidate, we had to create a party name, slogan, and logo that all went into what we were saying.
We had two hours to come up with everything. Everyone was very overwhelmed. We were researching, writing, drawing, and using our heads to put everything we got into this 5th grade presidential election. The clock was ticking, and we couldn’t bear the pressure. Finally the time had come to present. As each party came up, each speech was read. All of the teachers took notes, they were the voters. As we listened to other people’s speeches, we grew more eager and eager to go.
At the end of the day, everyone was proud, we all learned so much, and worked together as a group. We couldn’t imagine how much work it would take to really be running for President!
