Enjoy!

Dear Families:

If you can measure a year in a week, then we have had a truly amazing year. This week has been filled with the excitement of culminating projects that were demanding, exciting, and called on students to be their best selves. It was a great week and a fitting end to a wonderful year.

I wish you all the best for the summer months and hope that you are able to spend as much of this time as possible in the good company of family and friends.

Enjoy!

A few final notes:

Tomorrow, the Middle School students will attend our High School Graduation Ceremony at New York University. Please note that this is not an early dismissal day for middle school students. Students will leave the Sixth Avenue building at 12:30PM. At the graduation, Middle School students will be recognized for their hard work, completion of their current grade and their movement to the next, and will join in the celebration of the accomplishments of the seniors as they move on to the next phase in their education. As this is a very special occasion, we ask that students dress appropriately—no jeans or shorts, no printed T-shirts, shirts with collars and shoes are preferable. After graduation, the students will return to the Sixth Avenue buildings by 3:15PM.

The finals of our annual 24 Tournament, which were scheduled for this past Wednesday, will take place on Monday, June 11th. On the card for this event are fifth graders Margaux and Katharine in the one digit one dot match, fifth grader Benno and sixth grader Rene in the one digit two dot finals, fifth graders Jullian and Will one digit three dot finals, fifth grader Niles and seventh grader David in the two digit one dot finals, and sixth graders Charles and Liam C. in the two digit two dot finals. The prelinminary rounds did produce two winners: fifth grader Ryan won in the integer one dot division and seventh grader Ella won in the integer three dot division. Congratulation to these two and to all of the participants in the preliminary rounds!

Also on Monday, please make sure that your child comes to school with a bag lunch (no nuts, seeds, or glass bottles). The fifth grade will be going to Central Park for lunch and after lunch will visit the Central Park Zoo. The sixth and seventh graders will be off to Pier 40 for a variety of games and the eighth grade will spend the day at the beach. The annual End-of-Year Middle School Dance will take place at the Charlton Street PAC and will begin at 6:00PM. Pizza and ice cream will be served.

A final hiring update: Peter Fisher who has worked this year as Lower School PE teacher Pati Stolley’s assistant and has coached athletic teams at other NYC independent school will teach seventh and eighth grade PE classes while Marcus Chang is at the Teachers College Klingenstein Institute for the year.

1) From Director of Afterschool Cari Kosins: We would like to let you know of a change in the way Afterschool will publish future program information. In an effort save paper and get information to you before the end of the summer, we will be posting all Afterschool schedules, program descriptions and registration forms on the LREI website in early July. Once posted, you will be able to download the registration forms and submit them to us at your convenience. Please note that registration for all Afterschool Programs will proceed as usual with free childcare the week of September 10. The registration deadline for all programs will be Friday, September 14. All programs begin Monday, September 17. We will send out an email when everything is posted and available for viewing. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. Have a wonderful summer!

2) If you are interested in continuing as a rep next year or would like to volunteer to serve as rep for the 2007-2008 school year, please let Kasey Picayo know. You can email Kasey at picayosmith@aol.com.

3) Please join LREI families, faculty and administrators on the first ever LREI float in the Gay Pride Parade, Sunday June 24, 2007. We leave Fifth Avenue and 52nd Street at noon. High school students can receive three hours of community service credit by helping out. We will have music, kids, and fun–all are welcome! Click here for more information.

For Eighth Grade Families . . . .
1) Mark your calendar: Eighth Grade Pre-Moving Up Party, Friday, June 8, 2007 at 40 Charlton Street, PAC. Please arrive by 6:00PM for the Potluck Dinner and Recognition Program, which will be followed by dancing until 9:00PM. Details from your parent reps to follow.

2) The Moving Up Assembly will take place on Tuesday, June 12th, in the Sixth Avenue auditorium. The assembly will start promptly at 9:00AM and will run until about 10:30AM. Given space constraints we ask that only immediate family members attend (that being said, if there are extenuating circumstances please contact me directly). Immediately following the assembly, the eighth graders will return to their classroom, while parents will exit out the Bleecker Street doors and gather by the steps in front of Sarah’s classroom. The rest of the middle school community will exit the building from the Sixth Avenue side and then join families by the steps. When all are assembled, the eighth graders will receive their certificates and process one-by-one down the steps.

3) For those families moving on to EI, you should have received information about summer reading and summer math at the recent New Families Reception. If you did not attend this event, we will get these materials to your child. Reading lists are available on-line at http://www.lrei.org/libres/sr07.html.
