  • Bronx Arts School Takes a Capoeira Class
    Hunts Point

    Spend the day with children from the Bronx Charter School for the Arts, a charter school in Hunts Point. This month, take a lesson in Capoeira, the Brazilian dance/ martial art form. (9:00AM – 2:30PM: 15 volunteers; $12 for the class and $8 for lunch for yourself and one child).
  • Study Now, Play Later with Dunlevy Milbank

    Enjoy a morning of literacy, crafts, and other enrichment activities with the children, ages 5 – 11, of Dunlevy Milbank Community Center in Harlem. Volunteers will work with students to develop educational fundamentals through reading, writing, and various other activities. They’ll then move to the gym, computer center & pool to get active. (10AM – 12:30PM: 12 volunteers)
  • Record Books for the Blind with RFB&D (Saturday)

    Read and record books for the blind at RFB&D (Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic) in Midtown Manhattan. This is a seven-week committed project through February 17th; the first week will be training in the recording studio, and then you will be reading and recording books or assisting with other steps in the recording process. (12:30PM – 2:30PM: 10 volunteers)
  • Sunday Social at Rivington House

    Read the Sunday paper, relax, and enjoy some time with residents of Rivington House, a long term care facility on the Lower East Side for adults with HIV/AIDS. (10AM – 12PM 5 volunteers)

  • JCC Day of Service: Use Your Day off to Do Good (Day of Service – January 19)
    Join friends and neighbors from 11:00AM- 2:00PM on Monday Jan 19, 2009 as a part of the MLK Commemoration National Day of Service. This event is FREE and open to EVERYONE. No pre-registration is required. Projects will include: preparing food for are homeless shelters; making welcome kits for children in area hospitals; calling local and national officials to advocate against genocide; donate gently used coats as a part of our NY Cares Coat Drive. Free bagels, coffee and hot chocolate will be served.
