LREI Families

Dear Families:

In advisory groups this week, we talked about two important upcoming school events that provide a great opportunity for family discussion. As part of the Karamu event, which is scheduled for Friday, January 27th at 5:00PM, all Middle School students have been asked to think and write about an important family tradition or about a special object that holds meaning for your family and connects you to your culture. Each student was given a sheet on which to document the fruits of this dialog and there is space on the sheet for a picture related to the written narrative. We encourage you to do this as a family activity and hope that it serves as a springboard to other explorations of your family’s traditions and values. On Thursday, January 19th, students will share this work with the other members of their advisory groups. This will be an exciting opportunity for learning. Those students who want to have their sheets displayed as part of the Karamu exhibit will also have the chance to do so.

We also talked about the upcoming Visibility: Lesbian and Gay People We Love Photo Exhibit that will open on February 6th. This is a wonderful opportunity for family’s to come together to support the gay and lesbian friends and loved ones who are so important in their lives. We will continue this important discussion in advisories and in Adolescent Issues and hope that, in addition to continuing the discussion at home, you will consider submitting a photograph for the exhibit. For additional information about the history of the exhibit and about submitting a photograph, please read the attached letter.
