Of General Interest . . .

1) On Friday, May 26th, we will hold our annual Field Day at Pier 40. This is an exciting school event in which students from all three divisions will have the opportunity to participate in a fun-filled day of recreational activities. Students will spend the first part of the day in activities with their buddies. The younger lower school classes will return to the school after this while the third through twelfth grades will participate in a variety of activities in mixed age groups. Students will need to bring their own lunch along with a container of water. (No nuts or seeds, please.) Plastic bottles are fine, but please no glass containers! Clothing should be comfortable and easy to move in, shorts or sweatpants and athletic shoes. No sandals. Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat are strongly recommended. Finally, it is very important for students to arrive at school on time, by 8:30AM. We will return to school in time for 1:00PM dismissal. Fours through First Grade will be dismissed at 12:45PM. Thank you for your cooperation with this. We’re looking forward to a wonderful day!

2) LREI Track Athletes Garner Awards, State Recognition — The High School track team took third place in the GISAL track championship last week. The 4×100 meter team (comprised of middle schoolers Emily Konstam and Emma Vasta-Kuby and high schoolers Kristin Crichlow and Lily Wiggins) won gold (1st) in record-breaking time. Kristin Crichlow won the Silver (2nd) in the 100m and Emma Vasta-Kuby won bronze (3rd) in the 200m. Congratulations to all of the team members. Kristin and Emma qualified for the NY State AISAA Outdoor Track Championships, which was held yesterday. At the event, the track team ended its season on a high note. Kristin finished 2nd in the girls 100m, the 4x100m team finished 3rd and Emma Vasta-Kuby finished 5th in the 200m.

3) The annual 24 Game is underway with the Single Digit Double Dot competition having taken place last week and today. Semifinalists Parker (Fourth Grade), Rachel (Fifith Grade), and David (Sixth Grade) will meet at our Middle School meeting on Wednesday, May 31st. They will be joined by semi-finalists Max (Fourth Grade) and Cosette (Fifith Grade) in the Single Digit One Dot competition. In today’s other matches, Charles (Fifth Grade) prevailed over Kameron (Fifth Grade) in the Single Digit Three Dot competition, the Double Digit One Dot competition was won by Ryan (4th Grade) with Aaron (Sixth Grade) coming in second, the Double Digit Two Dot competition saw Ella (Sixth Grade) persevere over Henry (Sixth Grade); and in the Integer One Dot competition, Noah (Seventh Grade) won a hard fought match over Harrison (Seventh Grade). Congratulations to all of the 24 Competition participants and a well earned thank you to Margaret, Ana, Jenny, and Michelle for organizing such a wonderful event. We’re not done yet though, reports on the final matches, which will take place on the 31st, will be reported next week.

4) From Hig School principal Tony Fisher: Attached is a list of the colleges that our seniors have enrolled in for the past three years. This year’s class, like their predecessors, had a successful college search process. We are proud of each of them. A list of this year’s acceptances can be found at www.lrei.org. Congratulations LREI Class of 2006!!

5) On Friday, June 9th, the Middle School students will attend our High School Graduation Ceremony at the New York University. Students will leave the Sixth Avenue building at about 12:45. At the graduation, Middle School students will be recognized for their hard work, completion of their current grade and their movement to the next, and will join in the celebration of the accomplishments of the seniors as they move on to the next phase in their education. As this is a very special occasion, we ask that students dress appropriately—no jeans, no printed T-shirts, shirts with collars and shoes are preferable. After graduation, the students will return to the Sixth Avenue buildings by 3:15 or so.

6) From Middle School Librarian Jennifer Hubert Swan: It’s that time of year again! The Sixth Avenue library faculty need to start shelving and shelf-reading our book collection to review what materials have been brought back, what materials are missing, and what materials we need to replace for next year. In order to do this important work in a timely manner, we will be closing to circulation starting Tuesday, May 30th. After this date, no more books may be checked out of the library so that we can begin reshelving the collection. We encourage families to begin returning as many library books as possible during this time. Of course, the library space will still be open for student use. If you have any questions, please contact Me at jhubert@lrei.org.

7) Dig the tent out of storage! It’s time for the 13th annual LREI Camping Trip, which is scheduled for June 2nd-4th. It’s a great time filled with swimming, softball, fishing, campfires, s’mores and a wonderful dinner by Peter Hoffman of the Savoy. The cost is $30 per adult and $20 per child.
