The Woman Behind the Desk: Jenny Escorcia

Shay Embler

A couple weeks ago I interviewed Jenny Escorcia, who works at the front desk at LREI during the evenings.  I was curious to learn more about her and her life at LREI.  Jenny has lived in New York her whole life, and went to college at Long Island University in Brooklyn.  She speaks Spanish almost fluently; her mom is Dominican and her dad is Colombian.  Her favorite season is fall, but it used to be summer.  Here are some questions I asked her:

Q: How did you hear about LREI?

A: From the NCIS website, which is the New York Independent Schools website.

Q: Where have you worked prior to LREI?

A: I used to work at a daycare, before this, and I also used to work for the library.  I also used to work for the Administration for Children Services (ACS).

Q: How long have you been working here?

A: I’ve been here since September, 2016.

Q: How many hours do you work a week?

A: On average it’s forty, but if there’s evening events it might be more than 40 hours, it depends.

Q: What do you do during the day while you’re here?

A: My time is split between the front desk and the college office.  So I help the college office with administrative tasks like transcripts and stuff like that, and I cover the desk from four to seven in the evenings.  Adria’s here from eight to four, covering the desk.  Covering the desk is basically answering the phones, checking who’s coming into the school, who’s leaving…. And any maintenance things like if a toilet is clogged I will call maintenance, and stuff like that.

Q: What do you like to do outside of work?

A: Outside of work I like to watch movies, I like to go out to eat, spending time with my two dogs.  I have a dachshund and I have a yorkie, named Bentley and Lexi.  Spending time with family, ‘cause I live with my boyfriend cause I don’t live with my parents.  I like to watch sports, particularly baseball and football.  I like to cook; I want to get into baking.  Like, I don’t bake but my boyfriend did buy me a kitchen-y mixer for Christmas.

Q: What is your best memory from LREI?

A: I would say… I guess being asked to chaperone at the prom last year, ‘cause I didn’t expect it, you know, ‘cause I’m so new.  So when they were like “Jenny, do you want to come and chaperone at the prom? We’re going to invite you!” and I was like “really?” ‘cause I was flattered!  So that was nice, you know, that’s a good memory.

Special thanks to Jenny for sharing her time and insights!
