LREI 6th Avenue Library FAQ

What is my child’s library # and do I have to remember it?

Every student at LREI is given a library # that is the number assigned to their library record in the computer. When checking out a book, the student can either tell the librarian his or her name OR number. While it is helpful to know your child’s #, it is not necessary, as the librarians can look up your child’s record as long as we have their first and last name. Parents may check out books for themselves or their child using their child’s library #.

How do I check out a book?

If a librarian is present, she is happy to check out the book for you or your child. When there is no librarian present, please use the clipboard on the reference desk. Neatly write your child’s first AND LAST name, OR library #, followed by the barcode of the book you would like to take out. If you are taking more than one book, please list the barcodes after your child’s name on the same line.

How many books may my student check out?

In LS, students are allowed to check out one book in first grade, two in second, and so on. They may also check out additional titles before or after school with their parent or caregiver. In MS, students may check out 5-10 books for research or projects.

Where is the barcode on an LREI library book?

On the bottom of the back outside cover.

How long can books remain checked out?

LREI library books are due one week after they are checked out. But they can always be renewed for longer, and the librarians only send home overdue notices once a month to remind students to return or renew their books.

When can books be checked out?

Books may be checked out during a student’s regularly scheduled library class, or before or after school. The only exception is 4’s and K’s, who do not check out books during their library class, but may check out books before or after school with a parent or caregiver.

What do the color letters on the book spine stand for?

Yellow=picture book
White=older fiction (5th-8th grade)
Red=Easy/Beginner reader
Red+ white “short stories” sticker=story collection
Blue=folklore/fairytale Green=Biography/Autobiography
Orange=early fiction (2-4th grade beginning chapter books)
Yellow “Young Adult” sticker + white letter=older fiction that is most appropriate for 7th and 8th graders.

What happens if my child loses an LREI library book?

After all efforts to find a lost book have been exhausted, we ask children to replace a lost book with a book of their own from home that is in excellent condition—no page tears, pen marks or damaged spines. In some cases, where the book was an oft-used or special volume, we may ask parents to replace that specific title.
