My goal for this Honor’s Project was to challenge my ideas on what Numerology is and how it can help my understanding of other people. During the past two trimesters, I have been learning about the basics of numerology and synthesizing the basics into a comprehendible introductory guide. I met with Jacquline each week to discuss new ideas and lessons I was learning while exploring Numerology. I started by

reading Numerology: The Complete Guide by Matthew Oliver. It was a really good introduction to some of the basics of numerology. I also took notes as I went along to track all the things I was learning. I would also apply the lessons to the people around me by calculating the core numbers of my friends and family to test how accurate they were. I also create a excel page of the numbers of myself and my family as a way to keep track.

During the 2nd trimester, I worked on condensing all the things I learned into a 7 page introduction to share with those interested within the LREI community. I focused on describing the 4 core numbers,  how to calculate them, and what they mean. I used real life examples to show how each number played a role, and in the back I included a chart of each number description in relation to each of the core numbers. [https://blog.lrei.org/honors-projects/files/2019/06/WHAT-IS-NUMEROLOGY.pdf] I took a lot of time to make sure that the descriptions were accurate and clear and took a lot of inspiration from the guide I read. I continued to meet with Jacqueline to decide what would be the best way to distribute the guide. We agreed that printing out copies would be a waste because after not being able to start our Numerology X-Block die to lack of sign ups, were realized what a niche interest Numerology is. Instead, I created and shared a survey asking people if they were interested in learning about Numerology. If a person responded “YES”, I shared the introduction with them via Google Docs.

I think that this honors project was an overall success. Coming into it, I didn’t think that I would really gain any insight through numerology. However, being someone who has a hard time understanding people and social standards, I have found Numerology extremely helpful in not only learning about those around me, but also learning about myself. Through calculating my own numbers, I was able to put a name to all the quirks and individual traits that make me who I am. I am also a control freak and I like to be organized (partially because I have a 4 Life Path) so Numerology has helped me label certain traits people have by also helping me explore how individual each person has. Everyone is made up of more than 50 numbers, and even then environment and they way you are raised have a huge impact. Numerology is a great way to help others learn about what it means to be human and how to respect other people’s uniqueness while embracing your own.

UPDATE #1: 4/3

Unfortunately, the numerology x block I proposed with Jacqueline did not get enough sign ups to run. While this is disappointing, I am still very interested in learning about numerology and sharing it with the LREI community. From talking with other students, I have come too the conclusion that while some are interested in numerology, they are not interested enough to commit one x block for an entire trimester to learning about it.

After discussing ideas with Jacqueline, we have decided that one way to continue and share numerology would be to create tiny booklets on the basics of numerology and how you can calculate your own core numbers. While I am not technologically savvy, I plan to start researching different apps I can use to format a booklet easily. Jacqueline and I also discussed the idea of having an open lunch meetings for people looking to learn about numerology. This way, people would not have to commit long term but would still be able to learn the basics.

T3 Project Proposal

Please write a description of the project you are proposing. Why do you want to take this on, and what do you hope to learn?

In T2, Jacqueline and I studied the major principles of numerology and applied them to the world around us. This trimester I have formed an x block to share what I have learned with others and to continue to learn more about numerology. I hope to spark interest in those around me and teach others how to use numerology principles to learn more about the people around us.

Critical thinking, creativity, citizenship and courage are essential LREI learning values. Explain how you’ll draw on at least one of these values to complete your proposed project?

In my proposed project on numerology, I will be challenging narratives on numerology and other subjects that are considered to be “superstitious”. I will be challenging others to also think critically about popular narratives on numerology and subjects like it and encourage them to come to their own conclusions.

What is your proposed outcome? How will you be able to demonstrate successful completion of this Project? How do you plan to share your learnings with the larger LREI community (e.g., exhibit of work, poster of learnings, performance, etc.)?

I hope that this T3 x block will help spread what I have learned throughout the LREI community by sharing my ideas and resources to help others gain insight into the inner workings of numerology and how it impacts the world around us. I also plan to continue to discuss what I have learned with my peers and teachers in hopes of helping them understand what numerology is as well.

Please provide a general outline that indicates your work plan for the trimester? What are some of the key project benchmarks (i.e., goals that will help to ensure that you finish the project)?

Last trimester, I was able to gain a basic understanding of Numerology. This trimester, I plan to use my x block to build upon that knowledge and share it with others. I plan to create a outline of what to discuss in each session so that I can help others learn what I did in T2. I also plan to continue learning about numerology through reading the textbook on numerology Jacqueline and I did started in T2.

ORIGINAL PROJECT PROPOSAL

Project by: Mary Catherine FitzGerald (11th Grade)

Student(s)’s Advisor(s): Jacqueline Baker

Please write a description of the project you are proposing. Why do you want to take this on, and what do you hope to learn?

In September, I had a very interesting and in depth conversation with Jacqueline about numerology. Numerology, similar to astrology, is “any belief in the divine or mystical relationship between a number and one or more coinciding events.”.Beyond that, numerology is thought to In a complex fashion, a number represents a person based on their date of birth. Each number has different traits and pitfalls and different outcomes in life. For example, some believe that there is a strong correlation between ones numerological value and their learning disabilities. I’ve never really believed in astrology or any other belief that promotes the idea that people are changed by their date of birth. However, when Jacqueline explained to me what the traits of a 6, my number, are, I was very surprised by how accurate it was. 6s are usually stubborn and hard headed and individual. I was interested in what else numerology can uncover not only about who I am, but people around me.

Critical thinking, creativity, citizenship and courage are essential LREI learning values. Explain how you’ll draw on at least one of these values to complete your proposed project?

One of the three Cs of LREI is Critical Thinking. I think that this honors project would represent critical thinking because I consider myself to be a skeptical person. I don’t usually fall for the astrological gimmicks or other divine or mystical beliefs. However, I think this honors project could help challenge my ideas and skepticism and help me broaden my horizons. While moat people tend to dismiss beliefs like numerology as nothing more than a pseudoscientific lie, I think that this honors project could help me critically think about both the outside criticism and the outcomes numerology provides.

What is your proposed outcome? How will you be able to demonstrate successful completion of this Project? How do you plan to share your learnings with the larger LREI community (e.g., exhibit of work, poster of learnings, performance, etc.)?

The final outcome of this honors project in T2 would be a virtual presentation on all I have learned and how it challenges the mainstream beliefs of what numerology is. I hope that this presentation would briefly sum up the values of numerology and the skepticism around it. I would be able to share this with the LREI project easily because online presentations can be sent around and posted on websites easily. I imagine that I the presentation would be posted on the Honors Project website, and possible sent to the rest of the school community via email. I also hope to create a T3 x block about numerology to further educate the LREI community and engage in more conversation on numerology.

Please provide a general outline that indicates your work plan for the trimester? What are some of the key project benchmarks (i.e., goals that will help to ensure that you finish the project)?

In this Honors Project, I would meet with Jacqueline during Thursday X-blocks. We would discuss numerology beliefs and history and I would learn what and how different numbers represent and how they relate to the world around us. I would read both online articles about numerology and books by professionals to deepen my understanding. I hope to read Numerology and the Divine Triangle by Faith Javane, one of the most popular numerology books. Once I have an in hand copy of the book, I can come up with a timeline for completing the book as well as other resources by the end of the trimester. I would also write a short paragraph/ bullet point list each week that sums up the major points of the reading.
