The Past Makes the Future

By Myles Greene

On May 12th Jonny Fine came to the class of Deborah and Jacob’s 4th grade. He came in to talk about his past. He lived in England then he came to America 9 years ago. The reason why he moved was because his job, Goldman Sachs, asked him to come live in America.

Jonny said that he had to fill out a lot of paperwork so he hired a lawyer to do the paperwork for his family. What Jonny does at his job is he gets money for companies like Apple. A story that I heard was that the Fine family flew on an airplane. So the story was they got a cab to the airport and Freddie who was 3 at the time, puked on himself in the cab.

Someone asked what were the risks of moving to America. So Jonny said that the risks were thinking that it would not work out. One of Jonny’s favorite foods from England is Marmite, a spread. You’re supposed to put on toast.

Someone in the 4th grade class asked, “Did you feel like a citizen when you became one?” He said that his family was very proud of being a part of this country.

The Fines Will Never Forget

On Thursday May 12, 2016 Jonny Fine (Shoshi’s dad) came in to talk to Deborah and Jacob’s 4th grade class about his immigration story. He came in to talk to them because this year they are learning A LOT about immigration.

Jonny emigrated with his wife Emma, his oldest child Freddie, and his daughter Shoshi. He emigrated from England. When they emigrated they had to leave behind a lot of family members along with many other important things. That was very hard because they all lived very close together and when they emigrated they became over 4,000 miles apart. They moved 9 years ago in 2006. When they moved Freddie was 3 years old and Shoshi was 18 months. He moved because the company he worked for wanted him to work in America. The company he worked for was called the Goldman Sachs.

When Jonny immigrated he had to do many things in order to become a citizen. First he had to get a work Visa then a green card, and then he had to fill out a lot of paperwork. He also had to take a test, and so did Emma. How the test worked was, they split them up and asked them each 10 questions. To pass they had to get at least 6 out of 10 of the questions right. Before the test Jonny and Emma spent A LOT of time quizzing each other to make sure they would both pass.

The Fines took a car to the airport and then took a plane to America. Jonny said his favorite part of immigrating to America was the excitement of the living in the big city, New York City.
